Mykonos has a reputation, and it is largely deserved. This is the most glamorous island in Greece — a place of beautiful people, world-class beach clubs, designer boutiques and a nightlife that runs until dawn. It is also, beneath the gloss, a genuinely beautiful Cycladic island with a charming old town, excellent food and beaches that would be celebrated anywhere.

The Island

Mykonos is relatively small — 85 square kilometres — and sits at the heart of the Cyclades, close to the sacred island of Delos. Its landscape is dry and windswept, its architecture the classic Cycladic white. The main settlement, Mykonos Town (Chora), is one of the finest in the islands — a dense, labyrinthine old town of whitewashed lanes, bougainvillea and small churches, designed (legend has it) to confuse pirates.

Sights and Attractions

Mykonos Town is the island's greatest attraction — best explored in the early morning before the crowds arrive. Little Venice (Alefkandra), where the houses hang directly over the sea, is the most photographed corner. The windmills above the town are the island's iconic image. Delos — the uninhabited sacred island a short boat ride away — is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary scale and atmosphere. Do not miss it.

Beaches

Mykonos has excellent beaches, ranging from the famous to the secluded. Paradise and Super Paradise are the party beaches — beach clubs, DJs, beautiful crowds. Psarou is the glamour beach — sunbeds, superyachts, excellent food. Elia is the longest and one of the most beautiful. Agios Sostis in the north is the antidote to all of the above — no sunbeds, no taverna, just a beautiful wild cove.

Eating and Drinking

Mykonos has some of the finest restaurants in Greece. Nobu and Nammos at Psarou are the headline acts. Kiki's Taverna at Agios Sostis is the opposite — a simple, no-reservations grill that is worth any queue. In town, M-eating and Spilia are outstanding. The cocktail bars of Little Venice are perfect for a sundowner.

Weather

Hot and dry in summer, with the meltemi wind strongest in July and August — which keeps the heat bearable but can make some beaches choppy. Peak temperatures reach 30–32°C. The sea is warm from June through October.

How to Get There

Mykonos has its own international airport with direct flights from the UK and most European cities. By ferry from Piraeus (Athens), the journey takes 3–5 hours. Fast catamaran connections to Santorini, Paros and Naxos run daily in summer.
