Koufonisia is almost flat, barely five square kilometres, and home to fewer than 400 permanent residents. It has no airport, no large hotels and no pretension. What it does have is some of the most extraordinary water in the Aegean — shallow, warm, layered in shades of turquoise and jade — and a village so white and unhurried that arriving feels like stepping out of time.

The Island

The name refers to two islands: Ano Koufonisi (Upper), which is inhabited and where visitors stay, and Kato Koufonisi (Lower), which is uninhabited and reached by small boat. The main village — simply called Chora — sits on a low hill above the harbour, a tangle of whitewashed lanes, bougainvillea and small tavernas.

Koufonisia belongs to the Small Cyclades, a cluster of minor islands between Naxos and Amorgos that remain largely unknown to mass tourism. That is precisely their appeal.

Sights and Attractions

The island's appeal is natural rather than monumental. The sea caves and rock arches along the south coast are spectacular — best explored by kayak or small boat. The windmills above the village offer fine views across to Naxos and Schoinousa. The Church of Agios Georgios in the village is simple and beautiful.

Beaches

Koufonisia's beaches are its headline act. Pori is the finest — a long arc of pale sand with water of an almost Caribbean clarity. Finikas, Italida and Platia Pounta are smaller and equally lovely. Most are reachable on foot or by the island's one road. None are crowded, even in August.

Eating, Drinking and Shopping

The village has a handful of excellent tavernas — Capetan Nikolas is the most celebrated, known for its grilled octopus and fresh catch. There are a couple of small bars for evening drinks and a few shops selling local honey and ceramics. Shopping is not the point. Sitting by the water with a glass of wine is.

Weather

Classic Cycladic: hot and sunny from June through September (July–August peak at 30–32°C), strong meltemi winds in July and August that keep the heat bearable. The sea is swimmable from May through October.

How to Get There

Ferry from Piraeus (Athens) via Naxos or Paros — journey time around 5–6 hours. There are also connections from Naxos (1 hour) and Amorgos. The ferry schedule is seasonal; book ahead in summer.

Best For

Koufonisia is perfect for couples seeking genuine seclusion, beach lovers who want quality over quantity, and slow travellers happy to do very little, very well. It is not for those who need nightlife, a busy programme or easy access. For everyone else, it is close to perfect.
