Ios has a reputation that precedes it — for decades it was the party island of the Cyclades, drawing young travellers in search of a good time. That reputation is not entirely undeserved, but it tells only part of the story. Ios today is a place of genuine beauty, with some of the finest beaches in the Cyclades, a charming hilltop Chora and sunsets that rank among the best in Greece.

The Island

Ios is a medium-sized Cycladic island, roughly triangular in shape, with a landscape of rolling hills, terraced fields and a coastline that alternates between dramatic cliffs and sweeping sandy bays. The main settlement is Chora (also called Ios Town), a beautiful whitewashed village on a hill above the port of Gialos. The famous beach of Mylopotas lies on the other side of the hill.

Sights and Attractions

Chora is one of the most beautiful Cycladic capitals — a maze of whitewashed lanes, blue-domed churches, windmills and bougainvillea. It is best explored in the early morning or evening, when the light is golden and the lanes are quiet. The windmills above the village offer panoramic views over the island and sea.

The tomb of Homer is said to be on the northern tip of the island — a disputed claim, but one that adds a layer of mythological interest to the landscape. The Skarkos archaeological site, a Bronze Age settlement on a hill above the port, is one of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in the Cyclades.

Beaches

Ios has exceptional beaches. Mylopotas is the most famous — a long, sweeping bay of golden sand with clear water and a lively beach bar scene. Manganari on the south coast is wilder and more remote, accessible by boat or a long drive on a rough road. Koumbara near the port is a smaller, rockier cove popular with snorkellers. Agia Theodoti on the east coast is a beautiful, sheltered bay with a traditional taverna.

Eating and Drinking

The food on Ios has improved enormously in recent years. Lord Byron in Chora is a long-standing favourite for Greek cuisine. Polydoros serves excellent mezedes in a beautiful setting. The harbour at Gialos has several good fish tavernas. The nightlife in Chora is lively — if that is what you are looking for, you will find it; if not, the quieter restaurants and the beach bars at Mylopotas offer a more relaxed alternative.

How to Get There

Ios is well connected by ferry from Piraeus (around 5–7 hours) and by fast catamaran from Santorini (around 45 minutes) and Mykonos. It is an easy addition to any Cyclades itinerary.

Best For

Ios suits a wide range of travellers — those who want excellent beaches and a lively atmosphere, but also those who want a beautiful Cycladic island with good food and spectacular sunsets. It is more versatile than its reputation suggests.
