Elafonisos is a small secret that Greeks have been keeping from the rest of the world for years. A tiny island separated from the southern Peloponnese by a narrow channel, it is home to one of the most extraordinary beaches in Europe — and remains, against all odds, relatively undiscovered by international visitors.
The Island
Elafonisos is small — around 19 square kilometres — with a permanent population of around 1,000 people. The main settlement, also called Elafonisos, is a pretty fishing village with a harbour, a handful of tavernas and a relaxed, end-of-season atmosphere even in the height of summer.
The island is reached by a short ferry crossing from Pounta on the Peloponnese coast — the crossing takes just five minutes, which makes it an easy addition to a Peloponnese itinerary.
Simos Beach
Simos is the reason most people come to Elafonisos, and it does not disappoint. A double lagoon of white sand and turquoise water, it is divided into two bays by a narrow strip of dunes. The water is shallow, warm and an extraordinary shade of blue-green that genuinely rivals the Caribbean. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and one of the most beautiful in Europe.
The beach has basic facilities — sunbeds, a beach bar — but retains a natural, unspoilt quality. Arrive early in summer to secure a good spot.
Other Beaches
Beyond Simos, Elafonisos has several other excellent beaches. Kato Nisi is a quieter alternative, with similarly clear water. Sarakiniko on the north coast is more sheltered and popular with families.
Eating and Drinking
The tavernas in the village serve excellent fresh fish and seafood — the island's fishing fleet supplies the tables directly. Nikolas on the harbour is the local favourite. Eat simply, eat well.
How to Get There
Drive or take a bus to Pounta on the Peloponnese coast (around 90 km from Sparta), then take the five-minute ferry crossing to the island. The ferry runs frequently in summer.

Elafonisos is for beach lovers who want something genuinely extraordinary — those who are happy to combine it with a wider Peloponnese itinerary taking in Monemvasia, Nafplio and the ancient sites. It is a perfect two or three-night addition to any southern Greece trip.
